Methadone Program - How does it work?

Methadone programs are for those who are addicted to opiate based drugs. These treatment programs are generally conducted in an outpatient setting. Methadone treatment programs include the use of long acting synthetic opiate medications including methadone. The drug is taken orally and it works to repair parts of the brain that have been hijacked by drug abuse.

We provide harm reduction and a continuum of care to opioid addicted individuals creatively, efficiently, and in a manner that promotes dignity and respect

Once you have decided to get treatment and come in for an appointment, you will have a complete medical assessment.  We will ask you fill out a form that outlines your medical and drug history.  You will then be asked to provide a urine sample.  This is done to ensure that you are indeed taking opioid drugs.  You will then meet with the doctor who will explain to you your options.

We understand that most people are very nervous about their first visit.  That is totally normal.  People often think that we are going to call the authorities or will tell their family.  Listen, we understand how difficult this decision is and we congratulate you for trying to turn things around.  Everything you tell us will be kept confidential.  So if you are ready to change then send us an email or give us a call.

Staying Clean - for Life

Methadone treatment programs are not only about taking the drug itself. These programs are highly advanced and studies have shown that patients who go through therapy have a greater chance of staying clean.

People who are able to stabilize while on sustained doses of methadone have the best chance at a normally functioning life.

When patients can better avoid the street culture that added to their downfall, they can hold jobs, the risk of them coming in contact with HIV or other drug related diseases is greatly reduced and in many cases they are able to have families.

Some people ask how long they will be on methadone.  The simple answer is “it’s up to you”.  But studies have shown that the longer you are on it, the better your life will be.

Success is a Team Effort

Without the patient's willingness to change their life, the treatment program will likely not be successful.

In order for a methadone program to be successful, patients must follow the directions of the methadone clinic’s medical staff.  The success of a methadone program is a team effort. Both the doctor and patient should be in agreement on the steps that need to be taken in order for the patient to become clean. Without the patient’s willingness to change their life, the treatment program will likely not be successful.

More about Methadone

Methadone is a long-acting opioid drug that fills-up the same receptors in your brain as other opioids and your own endorphins. It can prevent the onset of withdrawal for 24-36 hours.  Once on a stable dose, you should feel “normal”. Treatment with methadone should be viewed in a similar manner as a diabetic with unstable sugars who requires long-term prescribed medicine to prevent complications from the disease.  Methadone maintenance is a commitment and takes a few months for the full benefits to be realized.
